Today would have been my father’s 87th birthday. For years he came to visit us in South Wales from his home in Northern Ireland. When I left NI to go to uni in Wales he was heartbroken yet year on year as I finished uni and married and stayed on he would come and visit us. He met and loved his grandchildren and got, I think, a bit of a kick out of having a birthday cake and a bit of a fuss on his birthday.

My children delighted to have their granddad with them. He loved children, never had any trouble getting down and playing with them, putting them first just as he had my sister and I when we were little.

Now ten years have passed. Ten years and four months. A second decade in which our lives move on while his is counted in retrospect and in the constant presence of memory.
